Theo van Doesburg was behalve beeldend kunstenaar ook criticus, tijdschriftredacteur, architect, dichter en wat al niet. Alles in zijn leven deed hij met een enorme gedrevenheid en doorzettingsvermogen. Steeds verkondigde hij luidruchtig zijn visie, en hij was niet gediend van tegenspraak. Voortdurend was hij bezig zijn leven en dat van anderen richting te geven. Als redacteur van 'De Stijl', het tijdschrift dat hij in 1917 met Piet Mondriaan en andere geestverwanten had opgericht, kwam hij in contact met iedereen die er in het modernistische Europa toe deed. Over Van Doesburg zijn duizenden publicaties verschenen, maar deze monumentale biografie, waarvoor de auteurs talloze archieven in Europa en Amerika raadpleegden, is de eerste die alle facetten van dit veelkantige leven belicht.

Na de Eerste Wereldoorlog ontstonden er interessante Belgisch-Nederlandse netwerken van modernistische kunstenaars, onder wie Theo van Doesburg, J.J.P. Oud, Jozef Peeters en Michel Seuphor. Zij werkten samen in de gemeenschappelijke projecten, bespraken elkaars werk in de ter beschikking staande media en construeerden zo hun reputaties. Uiteraard ook door te intrigeren, door werk te antedateren, door te roddelen en elkaar vliegen af te vangen.Theo van Doesburg was in al deze strategieën zeer gehaaid en verschool zich zelfs bij gelegenheid achter een destijds niet bekende alter ego als I.K. Bonset. Maar ook de Antwerpenaren Peeters en Seuphor, redacteuren van het tijdschrift Het Overzicht, lieten zich niet onbetuigd om de steun te winnen van onder anderen Paul van Ostaijen, Carel Willink, E. du Perron, Wobbe Alkema en diens collega’s bij de Groninger Kunstkring De Ploeg. De oprichting van de tijdschriften De Driehoek en later Avontuur zijn het resultaat van deze coöperatie. Ook andere samenwerkingsverbanden komen aan de orde, zoals de relatie tussen Charley Toorop en de Brusselse kunsthandel Sélection. Door de vele citaten uit brieven en essays brengt 'Van De Stijl en Het Overzicht tot De Driehoek' de bijzondere en dynamische wereld van het modernistische interbellum tot leven.(covertekst)
